This famous insurance company in USA was established in the year 1955 by Edwin Horner. It was established in Lynchburg, Virginia. 8 years later, Broadway-Hale, a California based department store chain, purchased the controlling interest of First Colony Life. Another two years later, Los Angles Investment Company bought the majority shares of Broadway-Hale. George Stewart became the president of this insurance company. The contribution of George Stewart is very remarkable in the history of First Colony Life. George Stewart's able leadership brought national recognition for this insurance company in the market of life insurance and annuity.
In the year 1968, First Colony Life made renovations in the former Guggenheimer department store located on Main Street. This building was converted into the home office of this company. In the year 1971, First Colony Life made an outright purchase of its then parent company, Los Angeles Investment Company. On the next year, First Colony Life bought American Mayflower Insurance Company of New York to expand its base in the separate market of New York. In the year 1981 First Colony Life became the third company to market a new kind of insurance product, ‘universal life insurance’.
